SOUTHLAND LAND BOA RD.

The monthly meeting, held on "Wednesday, March 22, was attended by the Chief Commissioner (Mr John Hay), Messrs J. M'lntyre, A. Kinross, J. M'Lean, and D. King. Mr R. F. Cuthbertson, for the trustees m the estate of W. Stevens, deceased, applied for renewal of license of pastoral run No. X 187 d, Wairaki, for a term of three years, so as to expire at same time as that of run" 187 c Granted, the land to be included in the license with run 187 c when re-offered.

Scobie Bros., lessees of s.g. run 43, Takitimo, asked if they couid surrender their lease so that the land may be bought under "The Bu3h and Swamp C. L. S. Act, 1903." Board has no power to grant the request. W. "Watt requested that section 3, block I, Danieltown, bs offered for sale. — All unsold sections in Danieltown to be offered at auction.

Albert Cole applied for 100 acres of abandoned sawmill area 420, adjoining section 49, block XXI, Xew River Hundred. — Land is in a. Slate forest, and cannot be dealt with at present.

Michael Duggan asked that sections 4 and 5, Glenham Settlement, bow grouped as one allotment, 485 acres, be offered separately, as ha wished to select five acres, provided lie had not to build and reside on it. — Application refused.

P. Brown wrote that he had discontinued putting refuse from his flaxinill into the creek running through part of Otahu and Merrivale Settlements. — Received.

J. Hunter, "Waiau Mouth, wrote that he surrendered all right of occupation of section 10, bioGk 1, Alton. — Received.

David Jack applied for a grazing license over laud in section 134, Takitimo (60 acres), and offered £3 per annum for same. — License granted under section 116 of Land Act, at ££■ per annum.

Gavin Brighton, asked that section 206, Wairio, be le-opened 10 selection.-r-Section to be re-offered on l.i.p. under sections 119 and 121 of "The Land Act, 1892," at 5s per acre.

C. S. Smith wrote that he would re-select section 60, "Waiau, if it were reduced to 5s per acre (present price, 10s), also that neighbours are running stock on it to the damage of his improvements. — The board could not see its way to further reduce the price of the land.

Ranger Collins, reporting on peetion 812, Hokonui district, valued the land At 10s per acre, and classified it as heavy bush land under the Bush and Swamp C. L. S Act. The section was withdrawn from the State forest reservation.— To be opened on the optional sj"?lem.

H. Kennett applied to lease section 12, block IX, Munapouri township. — The unsold surveyed sections in Manapouri Township to be offered at auction as suburban land at £1 per acre.

Mrs M. Murrell offered to exchange part of her freehold section 15, block IX, Manapouri. Township, required for road purposes, for an equivalent area at the eastern end of the section.— The Minister to be recommended to approve the exchange. Miss J. F. Sinclair applied to purchase section 391, Forest Hill Hundred.— Messrs Kinross and King to inspect and report. __ H. A. Massey notified that he had abandoned the following sawmill areas : — 262 and 263, Mabel Hundred ; 195 a. and 200 a, Lon^wood district ; 420, New River Hundred ; 164 a Oteramilra Hundred. — Abandonment accepted, subject to remaining sawmilling timber being cut off the balance of area 164 a.

Warden Riddell reported that lie saw no objection to leasing, under sections 119 and 321 of "The Land Act, 1892," the area of about 200 acres in the mining reserve fronting block 11. Olara S.D., applied for by "W. Bennett, as long as it is made subject to certain mining rights now held.— Ranger Campbell reported that the land was a sand ridge, valued at 5s per acre, no improvements. — The land to Be opened on 1.i.p., subject to the miningrights mentioned by the warden, at 5s per acre.

A. J. Nicholas asked for exemption from residence on sections 35, 3G, and 38, block XVIII, Jacobs River Hundred (Colac Bay, V. S.), on account of the 3wampy nature of the land. — • Granted during the pleasure of the board. Ranger Campbell reported on application of G. M. Morton for remission of rent on. section 13, Merrivale Settlement. — Sufficient grounds h?d not been disclosed to enable the board to recommend the Minister to grant a remission.

It was resolved to offer flax on run 517 to Mr Mount at £10.

An offer by W. J. Love for right to cut flax on islands in the "Wairaki was refused, and the Commissioner was authorised to accept auy reasonable offer for the flax from the adjoining owners of land.

On a report from the ranger, Miss A. Pearce's surrender of sections 3 and 4. block VTII, Longwood, was accepted, the section, which was described as a sandbank of little value, to be reserved for the protection of the railway.

The Department notified that Ciown tenants on Edendale Settlement may be allowed to raise lignite from their section for their use only. — Received. Duncan Taylor and A. Mornson objected to

"James Sutherland applied for block V (acre and a-half), Campbelltown Hundred. — The application will be favourably considered when the land is surveyed. Peter Peterson, William Gilmour, Andrew Searle, and others applied for land in Croydon Bush. —Resolved that the land he withdrawn from the State forest reservation at Croydon and be surveyed into sections suitable for the requirements of the applicants and others. Elizabeth Fosbender applied for 320 *cres in block XVII, New River Hundred, and Frank Fosbender anplied for 70 acres m tne earns block. — Granted, subject to approval. Transfers from Alexander M'Naughton to Thos. Davis (Merrivale), Albert Ml to Chas. Hansen (Oteranrika), and E. C. Section 40 to be weighted with value of improvements -Ehereon; sections 34 to 41 to be opened ou the optional system.
