OBITUARY
The Ashburton Mail reports the- deafen on Saturday last, at the ago of 67 years, of Mr John Hepburn, of Allenton. Mi Hepburn was present at the gold rush in Gabriel's Gully, and was one of Ashburton's earliest pioneers.
An Ashburtoii telegram states thai Captain Thackeray died suddenly in the Ashburton Ho.=pital on Wednesday morning. He had beeu a farmer m the Methven district for many years, and was a nephew of Thackeray, the novelist. He entered the hospital a few months ago, suffering with a broken leg which, was mending.
A Wellington telegram _ctates that news has Lsen Ticeived of the death in Melbourne of Hr H D. Levinsolm, merchant, of Wellington, formerly of Auckland. Our Alexandra South correspondent tele-gi-a-phed on Monday that Mr James Kelman, a well-known resident, died on Monday in the Duns-tan Hospital after undergoing an operation for bowel rupture. Deceased was largely interested in mining, being part ov. ner of the. Earnselcugh Company's dredge and claim. He had carried on business for some years as biacksmith and engineer. He was Mayor of Alexandra for some years. His wife died about seven years ago, and ho leaves a family of six children, mostly grovin up.
Antonio Whiting, daughter of Mr Whiting, manager of Boar Wioi Station, "Victoria, was killed a few days ago. At about 10 a.m. the young woman took a gun fov the purpose of shooting parrots, anel about an hour afterwards she was found by her sister lying unconscious with a gunshot wound in the heael. Medical aid was immediately sought, but on tho arrival of tho eloctor he pronounced life extinct.
A sensational accident happened to a train on nearing Nathilia station, Victoria, the other clay.
