ELECTION PREPARATIONS.

The Council of the Greenwich Conservative Association lias decided to support Lord Hugh Cecil.
The Liberals recently appealed for £50,000 to help the pooler constituencies, and have so far received £54,000.

Mr Balfour, the Premier, writing to Mr Salveston, th.? Scottish Solicitor-general, who is contesting Buteslm-e, wains the Unionists that if a Radical Government returns Home Rule will again become active, militant, perilous.
The staff on the Otago Central railwayworks at Chatto Creek was reduced at the beginning of the week (says the Alexandra Herald), 25 single men being discharged off the line.
The Mataura River previous to last week's rain was at a lower level than it has been for many years. Fords and reefs of rocks which previously had never been visible showed up in dozens of places up the river, and the Standard says that boys amused themselves last week by stepping across the reef from one side to the other of the river.
