CANTERBURY.
There was a hea.vy fall of snow on New Year's Day afternoon at Hanmer Springs, and the hills are thickly coated 1 . _As shearing on the stations in the vicinity is partly over it is expected that losses among shorn sheep will be heavy. The thermometer on the verandah registered 34deg during Sunday's storm. A large number of visitors from all parts of the colony are here at present.
