RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. WAIKOUAITI RACING CLUB ANNUAL MEETING.
Officials: President, Mr H. Buckland; vicepresidents — Messrs T. Mackenzie, M.H.R., A. S. Orbell, and Jas. M'G-ill; stewards— Messrs H. S. Allcock, W. Black, J. Brown, P. Byrne, H. T. Heckler, J. Puddy, J. Summers, F. H. Ward. W. White, W. Park, and P. E. Wilson; starter, Mr If O. Hazlett; handicapper, Mr G-ourley; hon. judge, Mr A. S. Orbell; hon. treasurer, Mr J. Matheson; hon. clerk of course, Mr W. Black; hon. clerk of scales, Mr M. Jamieson; hon. secretary, Mr E. Templeton. The annual meeting of the Waikouaiti Racing Club was held on the Domain couise fronting the township on Monday, under rather unpleasant conditions as regards weather. The wand blew with great violence across the course all day, the rain putting in an appearance now and again by way of variety. A little time was lost in making a start owing to one of the horses entered for the first race not having put in an appearance,^ Jbut the 'time so lost was soon made up, and the events "thereafter got through with creditable expedition. * The- attendance on. the course was, considering ,the weather, very good, and the course was .surprisingly dry and hard, the high wind ' probably - having assisted very '■ materially in^ bringing about this desirable -state of' affairs.;- Besides the" totalisator several -bookmakers were "on the - ground, so there ample -opportunity for sports ""to , back their Jancy.. . The . amount put through the machine during the day was £911 ,103, ] which should be regarded as satisfactory. ,The j dividends, "with the exception of the two last • (£6 38' and £6 '18s), were very small, in a | good- many case 9 investors not getting a great deal more than their money back again. The officials of the club all worked hard to promote • the success of the meeting, which certainly passed off very well; bad weather notwithstanding. Stepaside assumed conajnand fairly early in the Maiden Plate, and was never caught ; - and Quagga, after lying close handy for about half a mile in the Waikouaiti Cup, 1 " went to the front and had no trouble in getting home. Osborne R. just managed to' last long enough to annex the Two-mile Trot,- Eboness- -winning the Onemile with a good bit to spare. ..Stepaside, with 7lb penalty, had no great difficulty in •wresting the Bray Memorial from Trump, but a. protest was lodged on account of her having won the Maiden (an advertised race of 25sovs), but 'the stewards did not •consider .the protest should' be upheld, whereupon an was lodged,, and. the money invested "in the totalisator - impounded. Koputai won the Welter Handicap, stalling off ',a challenge from Lolah when hear home; aric^ Hawthorn r finished , first- in the Hawksbury ~ Handicap, Zealous and Korratai running a dead heat for second place.
