WELLINGTON NOTES. By Onlooker. December 29.

The Lower Valley Jockey Club had a successful meeting on Boxing Day and the 27th. During the two days the sum of £8161 was handled at the totahsators, an increase of £2676 compared with last year. The district-trained horses held their own with the visiting contingent. The Musketry — Dudu filly Amelia, trained by F. Higgott at the Hutt, scored her first win in the Maiden, but beat a very ordinary lot. The only other outsiders tc score were Black Savall, whe is trained by C. Pritchard at the Hutt. The Wellington-owned and Wanganui-trained Valkryie pulled off the Hurdles on the first day, and ran off on the second, when a big favourite. Mr C. B. Pharazyn scored with both Spoil and Good Intent. Narcotic, who is useful in such company, pulled off a race each day. Shrapnel Shell was taken up and started both days, but the best he could do was to run third. Evidently the gelding has lost his form. The crowd wiiich journeyed from. Wellington i to Palmerston on Boxing Day was probably • tho largest that has ever attended a meeting in the- district, barring the Hutt gatherings. -The private railway on to the club's course at Awapum was found a great improvement on . - previous years. The executive of the. club "are very proud of the fact that the totalisotor turnover exceeded all previous records for a two days' meeting in the colony. The figures are— First day, £21,607; second day, £17,734; — total, £33,471. The Wellington competitors at the nieetoing .did not ha,ve too govd a time. Levant who pulled off the Hurdles on the second day, wa3 the only one to score. Had Pushful not failed he would probably have scored again. D. Watt (Pushful's jockey) was taken to the Palmerston Hospital suffering from concussion of the brain. Watt has been I rather unl-ucky lately. He was only just get- | ting over the shaking he received when Good Hope fell and broke his neck at Woodville. Hawke's Bay-owned horses had a great Innings. Although owned in Napier, Asteroid' twinncr of the Cup) is trained at Fordell. The Apremont mare has improved since she joined 1 Tilley's team. Sflie has been racing consistently tif iate. There wen no less than four double winners at the meeting. , Whangamoan- has become quite uninanag- ; able of late on a racecourse. On the first day of the Woodville meeting he delayed the field some time. Since then H. Telfard -has had charge of him. He took the Wahati gelding to Mana.wa.tn for the Hack Hurdles. Prior to the fctaort of "the raoe he played up, and, getting rid of his rider, took no part in the race. Mi Walter Young is experiencing terrible hard iuck with Convoy, who suffered defeat in each of the big racas at Manawatu. He has 9.11 to carry in the Rangitikei Cup, which race he won without difficulty last year. r The Vanguard horse is in his best form at present The Ashurst Club had 1 a successful meeting ■yesterday. The Hutt-trained Guineas candidate, St Ludlam, was beaten by St. Amelia."Ehe -orange and blue' jacket "of Mr G. E. G-. Kichardson, which has not been' seen- much in -the' van- of late, 'was twice -carried successfully by Whakawhei,- a home-bred one by Daunt— Qjueensborough Nonette's sister (Bonheur) ■ scored her first win for her new owner, Mr Ned Conrick,' a Palmerston North penciller. : - The lots' she beat were very -third rate. The ' club " was " unlucky in striking 'bad weather. -Notwithstanding this drawback, the totalisator turnover was larger than last year.
