SOUTHLAND CALFDONIAN SPORTS. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
USTVEROAIIGILL, January 2. The Caledonian Society of Southland held its seventeenth annual gathering and games in the Queen's Park to-day. The weather was very disagreeable, cold showers and frequently sleet falling, and a cold, piercing wind blowing-. The attendance was also greatly interfered with, the gate money falling short of last year's total by £45. Still, £305 was taken at the gates, and it is estimated that there were 700Q, present. A feature of th« sports was the girls' danoing, and these events thoroughly deserved their place on the programme, but the committee should start them earlier, so as to enable the spectators to see the j finish. The judge (Mr D. Buchanan, of Ohristohurch) expressed himself as well pleased with the danoing. The most noticeable fault of lifting too high, he thought, would not be so apparent at the next games. In the Mile Race, Southland's crack runner, Couling, was conceding too long starts and he could not get nearer than third. The following are the results : — PIBROCHS. Prizes : £3, £2, and £1.
