CALEDONIAN SOCIETY OF OTAGO ANNUAL GATHERING.
The second day's sports in connection with the annual gathering of the Caledonian Society of Ofcago was held yesterdayafternoon, the weather being again most unfavourable. The high wind and passing showers, with a biting cold by way of Accompaniment, did not. however, deter jeveral thousands — probably about as many \& attended the sports on the first day — from nnding their way out to the Caledonian Grounds, and but few left before the programme was practically exhausted. The events all proved more or less interesting, and each, never failed to attract the atteniion of that section of the attendance for which it had special interest. The 220 STards Handicap was » Tery w;ell-contested race, and Humphrey well deserved his win. the 440 Yards Handicap was a great race In the final heat, but M'Lachlan quite evidently had -it in hand from' the start. In the Two-mile" Walk there was never any sxcitement, and the winners finished ' long distances jtj>art. The event which occasioned great "interest was the wood-chopping competition. Though timed for. 4.30, it did Eot commence until 'after 5 owing to delays i r preparation of . the logs. Perhaps the. eommitteg will, next year, take - steps to te% that everything- is' in .readiness at the ippointed" time, and also'' to prevent the. nublie crowding the ground immediately " m& competitors finish. The -time recorded -Ti>y -, the winner, ,W. Ewart, was 6min II '2-sjseo. The great wrestling event of the day was the competition in catoh-as-eatch-can style, for which a special prize -had' been contributed by the directors of 'the ■-society, and in which the Scottish athletes, A. A.. Cameron and 6. W. Johnstone, competed. A tough struggle took place between A. A. Cameron and B. J. Scott, and at on© time Scott appeared to have thrown the Scottish champion, but did not succeed in holding him, and Cameron gained the first and second falls. James- Riordan then met 6. W. Johnstone, and. there was a. very even tussle for some time, but ultimately the New Zealander succeeded- in disposing^ of the Glasgow champion in both the first •nd second falls. Cameron then wrestled! with Biordan, and threw him in the first and second fall, thus- winning the special prize. TKe competitors who tied for third place in the 12-stone competition on Monday, T. Byan and G. Ballock,, met again: yesterday morning. Ballock scored in the Cumberland style, and Byan disposed of BaHook m the catch-as-catch-can slyle, thus bringing. them level again. In the Cornish atyie, however, Byan gained the fall, and was thus awarded third place. The officials all -carried out their duties under.exception«|iy r - trying circumstances .most commend•bly,- and the press representatives are in-" aebted to Mr Dempster for his unremitting attention in the direction of supplying them with information. • He made a most efficient press steward. The telegraph Jboard superr intendent is deserving of V word of /praise for the manner in- which he kept the public supplied with- information,' any lapses being due to the fact that the..-numbers ~of ' competitors ;did not reach him as expeditiously as they might have. >,-• ■ .'■-. , The. following ore .the, results 'ot the day's •ports: — .... .
