CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP. WELLINGTON, December 13.

The following nominations have been received for the champion chess tournament, to be held at Oamaru on Boxing Day: — Wellington — W. E. Mason (chairman), O. W. Davies, J. A. Connell, R. J. Barnes, F. K. Kelling, F. Mason. Dunedin— R. A. Cleland, D. Forsyth, J. Edwards, J. H. Hamel. Rangitikei — O. C. Pleasants, A. Gifford. Timaru — B. Mason. Auckland — J. F. Grierson and E. J. Miles. Play will not start till the evening of Boxing Day. December 26. The seventeenth annual chess championship tournament under the auspices of the New Zealand Chess Association was opened here this evening by Dr Garland, in the absence of the Mayor. The fo' lowing are the opponents in the first round: — x>arnes v. Kelling, "W. E. Mason v. Davies, B. Mason v. J. Mason, Edwards v. Cleland, Forsyth v. Hamel, I ieasants v. G-ifford, Adair v. Miles.

— The- vicar of East Ardsley, a Yorkshire industrial centre, ha Braised over £10,000 by appeals sent out in letters. In 1881 £5309, the tost of a new church, was raised from 2624- subscribers in response to 125,003 written letters, the work of the vicar and his family. A mission church and school were erected in 1889, and 1 £1503 received from 5000 subscribers as a result of thei issue of 60.000 letters. In 1893 a club for working men was opened at a cost of £2000, also raised in response to 60,000 letters. Recently the Sunday schools were enlarged l , for which £1251 was obtained,
