CROMWELL, December 27. The weather was fine and the attendance [ very good for"*iihe first day of the GromweU races. The sum of ,£ll9O was put through the machine, being £50 over last ycax. The racing was excellent, the class 'of norses competing being exceptionally good for a country meeting. A ecuple of protests made the meeting finish a little behind time. Results : — Maiden Plate. — Radium 1, Capetown 2. Five started. Time, Imin 19 3-ssec Dividend, £2. Cromwell Handicap. — Kelburn 1, Tugela 2. Four started. • -Time, Imin 30 2-ssec. Divi-dendj-£2 10s. Hack Race. One mile. — Grand Fauna 1, Mariposu- 2. Foui started. A splendid race. Time, Imin 48 3-ssec. Dividend, £3 Bs-. Upper Clutha Trot. — J C Slsec. 1; Boojum, *3Osec, 2. Eighti started. Time," smin 27Jsec. A protest for 'inconsistent running was dismissed. An appeal was lodge 1 ?!, and" the money on the machine impounded. If the appeal \is dismissed. J.C. will pay a dividend of £5 6s. If the rac6 is given to Boojum he will pay £3 IBs.
