CLIFTON SPORTS. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
INTERCAR&ILL December 26. , The ninth annual 3ports -under the auspices of the Clifton, TToocieud, and Bluff A-thietio Society were held at Clifton Recreation G-iw.iid to-day. The weather was threatening, but as the day wore on the conditaons improved, and a splendid day was spent. The ground was in first-rate order. This is one of the best country sports held in Southland, and, if it continues growing in favour as it is doing, will soon be on. a level with the larger centres. The ohopping, running, and wrest.ung were particularly attractive. M'Lachlan" won the Clifton Handicap and the 22Oyds Race in five style. Although Scott was victor in the Cbllar-and-eibow and Cumberland "Wrestling, Johnston (who was suffering from an injured foot and had a painful Jimp) got thft first fall in Catch-as-catch-can, and as neither could obtain a, fall in the second bout they decided to share the prize. Johnston's showing under the cirou instances was particularly brilliant. O'Connor chopped splendidiy, and won his cempetition in fine style. The B.uff Naval Band was in attendance, and enhanced the proceedings with good music. The attendance was good, ov>ir £90 being taken at the gates.
