MOKENA KOHEBE. Mokena Kohere was a chief of the Ngatiporou tribe, East Cape. He first came into prominence in 1864, when re, the late Major Ropata Wahawaha, and the chief Henare Potae, made a vigorous stand against the Hauhau fanatacism, which had first reached the East Coast and had taken a strong hold on some of the Ngatiporou people. He took part in several engagements with the rebels during the period from 1864 to 1870, and was consistently loyal to the pakeha Government.
