CRUISE IN TANNER'S ARK.
A TRYING TRIP. "THE ARK" ABANDONED. Felix Tanner's Ark, which left Wellington on Thursday, Bth insfc., with the owner and a young man named Blandford on board, was sighted by the s.s. Mararoa off Cheviot on Saturday morning flying a distress signal. The crew of two was taken on board the steamer and the oraft abandoned. Tanner's companion, W. S. Blandford, cam© on to Dunedin. The Ark, it may be added, was built in the form of a large barrel, about 12ft long and 6ft wide, with a bow and stem built on to the ends after the manner of an ordinary boat. The two compartments thus forried for© and aft were not watertight. The vessel was fitted with a keel consisting of a 24ft length of railway iron. Sho also carried three tons of concrete as ballast. It was the weight of this ballast, with the water in the two end compartments, which proved disastrous.
The Ark carried two masts, and in addition to fore-and-aft canvas had a square foresail /or running before the wind. Neither Tanner (who has returned to Wellington) nor Blandford appears to be much the worse for the adventurous, if foolish, voyage.
