JEWS IN SCOTLAND.
The Jewish Year Bock for the year 5665, or from lOth September, 1904, to 29th September, ISGS, has just mad-e its appearance. It states that in Glasgow the Jews number .86 per cent, of the total population, while in Edinburgh the percentage is .47 per cent. These figures are much below those for , some of the principal towns in England. -I Among these Manchester heads the list wit-ii 5.15 per cent., and L&eds comes next with 3.50 per cent.. In London the Jewish population is very large, as everyone can ccc at a glafcce who traverses part of the East , End, where posters in Hebrew are rapidly • becoming almost ■> as common as those in English. On account of the immense popn- ! lation of London,- however, the percentage works out at a lower figure than those of other important towns. j In Edinburgh one of the Rabbis, preach- ! ing on the Day of Atonement, referred to ! certain recent disclosures, which, he said, ' had disturbed the Jewish as' well as other : members of the community. In certain ' towns, and he regretted to say even in Edinburgh, there were people living in a state of jnoral and intellectual abasement, which struck a fearful blow at Jewish morality. ' He added that for tke eradication of such ' a. disgraceful state of affairs every assistance ' should be given. This warning note has not ", been sounded any too soon. In London the episcopal clergy in the East End have tome testimony to the purifying influence exerted ■ on certain notorious streets by an influx of 1 Jews. Like a Scotsman, however, a Jew is ! more harmful t<hah other men when he takes \ to bad ways. In the case of both races their j force, of character tells, either for good orevil. I
