HUGE GASWORKS.
The rapid spread of electric lighting seems to be very far from putting an end to the v&s of gas, even in the large cities. A year or two ago Edinburgh started an immense new gaswork, erected near Granton, and forming 1 quite a landmark for mariners. Already this is surpassed in Glasgow, where gasworks, said to be among the largest in the kingdom, have been erected at Provan, md have just been ouened. The site covers 123 acres, and oost about £78,000. The works consist of four sections, only one of which is completed as yet. When they are in full operation 48,000,000 cubic feet of gas ©er day will be produced. There will be two gas-holders, each with a capacity of eiffht and a-half million cubic feet of gas. ThWe are eight and three-quarter miles of railway on the auoa included withm the works At present the area supplied with eras by the Glasgow Corporation measures 16 miles by 12 miles. When the Provan iorks are in full operation the gasworks
now in operation at Dalmarnoek will be discontinued.
