CHR ITCHURCH POULTRY SHOW.

This annual fixture, which opened on Thursday last, is reported to have been a pronounced success in every way. The exhibits of pouitrj- numbered 970, including classes for such newly-imported breeds as Campincs and Jubilee Orpingtons. The strongest' representations were Wyandottes (162) and Orpingtons (138). The judges and the vane-ties allotted them were: — Mr L. Banks (Christchurch), Cochins, Minorcas, Andalusians, and .Spanish; Mr E. Reilly (Buncdm), Orpingtons, Langshans, Indian game, Polish, ducks, geese, and turkeys ; Mr F. l!o<gen (Greymouth), Plymouth Rocks, Houdan=, Biahmas, Leghorns, Hamburgs, English game, Anconas, Cainpines, Malays, variety class, and bantams ; Messrs Reilly and Rogen, Dorkings and W}-an-cloltes; Mr G. Tomkins (Oamaru), pigeons; Messrs G. B. Ritchie and M. R. Taylor, canaries and other cage biid«.

The prize for the best exhibit wa"= won by a dark Dorking cock ovvned by Mr S. C. Kcsteven, who now holds the trophy for good, hating wo.i it tho second time. The bird was generally recognised as the bestbodied bird in the show, and good at all points, noticeably good even m teet though four years old. He is an old Crystal Palace Winner. The runner-up for this trophy was a brovMi Leghorn cockerel, the property of Mr G. L&itch, Hawke's Bay. This bird was certainly good, and d-eserved the two 'cups which it won, notwithstanding a tendency to break in the face. He also wanted a siclilo feather. Top colour and size, however, cariied him through. Of other exhibits it may be remarked that in Langdhans Messrs Double Bros.' first cock was slightly light in eye, but light and short feathered in wonderful condition, and, generally speaking, a magnificent bird. The winning cockerel (M'Cracben's) is described briefly a« a typical Lang-shan. well deserving his cup trophy. Mr G. M. Gardiner's first prks pullet was of racy build, beautiful colour, and splendid legs. Double Bros.' second and thwd pullets lost in leg-feathering, but were otherwise perfection and in sp'eudid condition. In Minorcas Messrs A. and H. Clarkson's first cock was an e3sy winner, though Mr Irvine, of Dunedin, showed a deserving second. Mr J Brown's thirdprize bird was the winner last year.

.In cockerels Mr J. M'Kenzie's bird, which took first and second cups, was spoken of as the largest Minorca e\er shown in New Zealand. It was in -plendid condition, had beautiful colour, wao good in eye and !obe — apparently a son of a bird imported last year. Adhering to type a& set by this bird, prizes were allotted iwith great consistency throughout the Minorca classes, with the result that better birds from other standpoints were passed. In white Leghorns Mr C. Lucas won with a very good bird, but Messrs Omand and Dempster's second prizewinner would have stood a better chance had its comb not been damaged by scalding just before show. The first cockerel was a lucky winner, being very small and narrow, with a regular cape on the back of its neck, and failed in symmetry. His colour, face, comb, and lobe carried him through. No. 184-, a passed bird, was without doubt the finest cockerel in the clpss, being- beautiful in type, good in size, tail and wing. Had just a suspicion of straw on saddle hackle, and was coarse in head. Face and lobe were good. The winning white hen had beautiful top colour, and was veiy large, but failed in breast almost to washyness. Mr Lillico's third hen was, in tho opinion of many, the best bird in the. class.

In Orpington black oocks the first bird wa* a nice true Orpington, good in colour, eye, and head gear ; could have been a (rifle better in leg, but won easily. Most of tho winners in this class were from Bisham Poultry Farm. In cockerels, the winner of first and cup was shown by Mr Tyree, who priced it at £5 5s against an imported bird, which he valued at £10 10s. The judge's opinion that it was the finest bird of the breed lie had ever seen was borne out by the bid-ding-, which took place at subsequent auction, when the bird was claimed at £11 11s.

In buffs, the third hen (Mr H. Pannel's) had a narrow shave of securing first, but handling showed her to be a laced bird, every feather showing a ginger shade at edge. Otherwise she was a beautiful bird. The buff 'Orpingtons .generally were a good class, the pullets particularly being good throughout. Golden Wyandottes were good • — indeed, wonderfully so in lacing, but the silvers were woefully weak, not a really good-laced bird in the lot. By "a strange mischance" the pullet taking first and cup was not handled. Though looking well in the pen, she haa not a laced feather on the breast.
