OTAGO AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL SOCIETY.
The monthly mesting of the committee of the Otaeo A. and P. Society w?s held on Thursday, and was attended by Messrs James Gow (vice-president, in the chair), ?T.? T . Souter, W. H. Taggart, J. W. Blair, J. Nimmo, G-. MacEwan, A. C. Stronach, W. Burnett, J. A. Roberts, and T. Ritchie. Apologies were received from the Hon. T. Fergus (president), Messrs H. M. Driver, J. Ross J. Patrick. W. Blackie, James Shiel, A. Johnson, and J. C. Gow.
Mr A. A. Thornton, of the dairying service branch, Department of Agriculture, wrote -with icierence to obtaining prizes for the highest points secured for butter and cheese exported from the South Island for the season 1903-1904, and pointed oui +hat the greater part of the butter and cheese was manufactured specially for shew purposes, and, seeing that the society w?s working in the best interests of the danying industry, he- felt sure that the committee? would not hesitate in taking the matter up and giving a, prize foi the highest points scored for two coses of cheese aud two of btit+er to be taken out of a shipment by the grader — =ay, cheese in March or April ar.d butter in February, which passed through the ports for shipment, — and placed under the same conditions as on Home steamers. Mr Thornton pointed out that ia his opinion this competition would urg° factory managers in both butter and cheese to endeavour to obtain these prizes, which would mean to the factoiy managers who secured them very high testimonials, and. so far as our ■winter show wos concerned, llae entries "wroulcl make fine exhibits and be much admired by all. After careful consideration of the letter the ouestion was referred to a sub-committee
to report upon at next meeting.

The Secretary laid on the table specifications for a caretaker's cottage at Tahuua Park, which, after consideration, wr.s refeired to the Buildings Committee, -with power to act. The Grounds Committee reported that a considerable number of young lupins had been recently planted on the Sandhills outside the society's ground, most of which appeared to be growing well. A considerable amount of detail business in connection with the corning winter shc-w was discussed, and ths chairman urged all the members of the committee to \xse their best endeavours to niake the winter exhibition of farm produce and live stock as successful ps hitherto. s>nd pointed out that as the theatre had been secxired in connection with the show ample room would be afforded for all who visited the show in June.
