Another proof of the good work which the New Zealand Department of Industries is doing in bringing the merits of New Zealand timber under the notice of the manufacturers of Europe- has just com© to light as the result of an application received from Germany by Messrs A. Moritzson and Co. for samples of New Zealand timber suitable for furniture, piano manufacture, and other purposes. The Government was asked to forward samples to the firm at Hamburg, with the result that a complete collection of samples has beon got ready, and is to bo deposited in tho Museum, of Industries and Trade at Cologne. The department has also issued a comprehensive table of 29 varieties of timber indigenous to New Zealand, arranged in order of importance to the requirements of the timber trade, giving tho botanical naotno and the native name of the timber, a full description of its nature, where obtainable, and the sizes available, the uses of the timber, and the approximate price f.o.b. New Zealand ports. An Auckland telegram states that the New Zealand and River Plate Land Mortgage Company, in gane>:til meeting on January 5, resolved to adopt the recommentions of the directors to pay a dividend of 3^ per cent, for the six months ended 31st October, 1903.
