Only a small number of these could be classed as prime beef, the majority being only medium to good quality steers, with several pens of cows and heifers. Porkers and baconers inert a brisk sale, all forward bringing very satisfactory prices. Suckers sold at 11s to 15s; alips, 17s to 20s; porkers, 35s to 50s; baconers, 53s to 725; big pigs, up to 87s. (Limited) report having heH their fortnightly sale at Balclutha on Friday, the 7th August, whan, there was a large gathering of farmers and buyers from surrounding districts. The demand for both cattle nnd sheep was very keen, nnd splendid .prices were- obtained for all offered. Their sales were on account of M«ssra Chas. Smaill (Kaitangata), Jas. Marshall (Hillend), D. Murray, Gilbert Stewart, Wm. Marshall (Warena), Adam Canrobell (Stony Creek), J, B, M'Neill, Wm. Allan (Balclutha), Geo. Anderson (Stirling), and others. Fat wethoia brought 20s to 23s 3d; fat ewes, 17s to 20a; ewes in lamb, 12s to 18s; store wethers, 16s to 17s 6d ; hoggets, 12s 9d to 13s 6d ; tat cows, £ Q Ss to £6 83; storo cows, £4 10s to £5 10s. The National Mortgage and Agency Company (Limited) report having held a clearing sale for Mr J. L. Baxter, Maungatua, on Tuesday, the 11th inst. There was a large attendance, ano! as Mr Baxter's farm was sold everything was offered for absolute sale. The weather being fine, and biddings spirited, a clearance was effected in a very short time at very satisfactory prices. Draught geldings brought £39 10s,. £38. 10s, £30, and £20 10s respectively ; 1 mare, £39 ; light harness gelding, £22 10s; 1 buggy mare, £21; 1 do, £13 10s; 1 do, £13; a few outside entries in draught horses sold up to £33; steera brought £5 6s; heifers, £4 10s; calves, 375; sheep, 13s lOd. The implements, furniture, a.nd sundries, being in good oiderj realised full rates.

Rabbitskins.— The offerings at auction are still small. All the buyers were present at tho sales on Monday, and bidding was spirited for all classes of skins, which sold at prices much, the same as those obtaining last week. Prime winters (bucks and does), sold at 15Jd to I5Jd; medium to good, 14Ad to 15id ; inferior, 12$ dto 14d; autumns, lpd" to 12id; sumnwrs, 7d to S^d ; winter black and silver greys, 22d to 25Jd ; autumn and summer black and silver greysi 9Ad to 15£ d per lb. "Sheepskins.— All the local buyers were represented at Tuesday's sales. Fairly large catalogues were submitted, comprising the usual assortment of dry skins from the country, as well as the local butchers' green skins. T'hera was a brisk demand, butchers' green skins meeting, a particularly good sale. Best merino sod at 6d to 6id; medium, 4Jd to 5Jd; best halfbred, SJd to 6id ; medium, 4id to sd; best cross* bred', 4Jd to "5Jd ; medium, 3Jd to 4d per lb ; butchers' green skins, 3s 2d to 4s 9d each. Hides.— The fortnightly -auction sales wera well attended, and prices obtaining on Thursday last showed somo improvement compared v/ith thoso ruling a fortnight ago. Tho advanoe was most marked in the case of medium and light ox and cow hides, whilst stout, heavy hides also showed seme improvement. Quotations are: Prime heavy etout ox, 6d to 6Jd per lb; good, 5Jd to sid; medium, 4?d to sd; li°ht, 4d to 4Ad; best stout cow, 5d to 5Jd; good, 4|d to 4~3d; medium, to 4Jd; light, 3jtl to 4d; bull hides, 2£d to 3d; yearlings, 23 Oil to 3s 6d each; calfskins, Is to 1a 6d each. Tallow and Fa.t.— All coming to hand 13 readily taken up, mostly for local consumption. Best rendered, 21s to 23s per cwt ; medium, 19a to 20s ; rough fat, 12s 6d to 16s 6d. Grain.— Oats: Seed lines and prime milling quality continue to meet a fair remand at lato quotations. For best feed (prime B grade) there is also fair inquiry, and the same may be said of medium B grade. Lower qualities, however, havo little attention. We quote: Seed lines, Is lid to 2s 3d per bushed; prima milling, Is 8d to Is lOd; good to beat feed, la 7J to Is 7Jd ; inferior to medium, Is to la 6d (sacks extra). Wheat: Only prime milling quality is in favour with local millers, who are not to bo tempted with anything o£ lower grade. Medium quality is therefore without much attention. Fowl wheat is offering sparingly, and shows some improvement in value. We quote: Prime nulling, 3s lid to 4a 2d per bushel ; medium to good, 3s 5d to 89 9d ; best whole fowl wheat, 3a 2d to 3s 4d ; broken and damaged, 2s 6d to 3s (sacks extra). Barley : No sales passing, and quotations nominally unchanged. Potatoes.— The market is fairly well supplied with Derwents and other table sorts, and prices show no quotable change. "We quot»: Best Derwents, £4 to £i 5s per ton; piirna Oamajus, io £4 7s 6d; medium, £3 10b to £% 15s; bee* kidneys, M 10s to £5 ; others, £3 to £1 (bags in). Chaff.— The market is glutted with chaff of medium quality, for which there is no inquiry, and sale 3 arethtricult to effect even at reduced prices. Prime quality has not suffered to the same extent, andi is in fair demand' at quotations.
