THE GAELIC SOCIETY.
Ihe usual meeting of the Gaelic Society was held in the Oddfellows' Hail on Wednesday evening, Chieftains R. Mackenzie and Colin Aiackenzie presiding. There was a. fairly good attendance, and the gathering proved, as successful aa its predecessors in every way. Mr Stoderick Mackenzie expressed great pleasure in informing the meeting that he had received '«, letter from their chief (Mr Dugald MacpherBon) r who, although enjoying his trip to Scot'!and,_ was keeping in mind the members of tfre Society, to whom he sent his kindest ic-gards- Mr Mackenzie also- stated that he had ceceived a letter from his namesake, Mr Win. who went home to the Highlands tome time ago. The writer stated that he-fwis-hed to be kindly remembered to the Highlanders in Dunedin, of whom he was frequently /■^Linking. An invitation from tho Highland /Society of Southland- to attend their annual feathering on Friday next was. read, and "Mr Keil M'Fadyen was appointed a delegate to represent the society thereat. The society pesnesses some excellent vocalists, and the numbirs that were rendered last' evening were jn"O3t enjoyable, -the audience finding them fory acceptable. Songs were given by Mrs Lister ("AVill ye no come back again '), Miss Cunpbe-11 (" Ann*2 Laurie "), Miss Annie M'Donald ("Douglas Gordon"), Mr Neil M'Fadyen. (" Duthaich MhicLeoid " and " Moliladh Bhraidalbainxi "), Mr Simon M'Donald k" Nighean nail reidii-shuil "), Mr D. M. Fea 4" The Highlandman's toast " and " The march <h the Cameron mea"), and Mr R. R. Donaldeon (" The flowers of the forest "). Mr Donald 31'Pherson gave a reading of Pattison's transflation of Duncan Ban's " Last Farewell to the Hills,'* and Mr M'Fadyen afterwards sang the 'original song in Gaelic. The choir, under the conductorship of Mr J. Nelson, sang " Muile aiam Mor-bheaun. " and " Ged tha mi gun chrodh gun aighean" in a manner that left nothing tc be desixed. Selections on tha bagpipes were given by Pips-major M'Kechnie r.ild Mr J. Murray, and the accompaniments Curing the evening were pl.iyed by Mis 3 Reeve.
