DUNEDIN HOMING PIGEON CLUB.
The above club held a race on Saturday last from St. Andrews, a distance of 101 miles airline. Ths birds had the fortune to get a. good day and a favourable wind, of which they took advantage, making a record velocity for the Season, the first bird flying the distance in lhr 40min and the next three birds coming very close, there being only two minutes between the first bird and th« fourth. The results were as follows — Mr J. Blacke's bird Kurow, with a velocity of 1780 yards per minute, 1 ; Mr H. Short's bird Red Rover, with a. velocity of 1774 yards 2ft per minute, 2; and Mr H. Short's bird Young 86, with a velocity of 1748 yards lft per minute, 3.

A cr~p of interest to school teachers and paa-ent" was heard at the Whangareri Police Court tbe other day. Mr T. Hutchison, d M. , presided. Mir Rountree, of Waikiekie. prosecuted Mr Morris Priestly, the headrnp ter of the lecal school, for -an alledged assault upon his son, -aged 13 year 1 ?. The evidence showed that the master hac 1 punished the boy for eating sensen in -fhool, which was forbidden owing to its pr fume. The punishment complained of was ihe administering of two slaps on each haii 1 with a strap, and four cuts on the bare legs. Dr Hall said there were two small black bruises on the boy's legs. Mr Hutchison gave judgment for the teacher and dismissed the information with £5 19s 6d coats. He said a master had a right to inflict rearonable punishment. The master had the best opportunity of deciding what was reasonable chastisement, and should be protected, unless it was clearly proved that the flogging was excessive.
