WAIKOUAITI.

December 20. — The members of the Flag £wamp Bible Class held a social in the schoolroom on Tuesday night to mark the end of the present session. Between 40 and 60 members and; their friends were present, and the phair was occupied by the Rev. J. J. Cairney. All kinds of parlour games, including pingpong, -weTe entered into with zest, and a pmsical programme was gone through, comprising a piano duct ('•' II Bacio ") by Misses •Pryde and H. Macdonald, song 3 by Miss J. Stringer ("Life's roses"), Mr Bepgley ("The [vacant chair"), Mr Blair ("The song that reached my heart"), Mies J. Macaulay |"Rothesay Bay"), Miss Macdonald ("The Better Land "), and Mr J. N. Stewart (" Gates mt the West"),- a- duet by Misses Macdonald «nd J. Macaulay (" Come o'er the moonlit ■ea "), recitations by Miss E. Kennedy (" Aunt Tabitha") and by Mr Stringer, a piano solo ■by Miss Pryde (" Les Muscadins "), and a harmonium an concertina duet by Miss J. and [Mr J. Stringer. Mr Cairney gave a short mddress, similar to that he gave to the Wai- "' fcouaiti clas3, and Mr Stewart returned thanks for the hospitality shown by the members, " Remarking that he was glad they had embraced (the opportunity given them by Mr Cairney to " improve their intellectual faculties. Tea, cake, . and'- fruit were handed round by the ladies cluring the evening, and a pleasant t'me was •pent by all. Public School. — The usual break-up pionic of the Waikouaiti School was held cm Friday last. The early part of the day was cold and - jhowery, but it cleared up later on, and a fair number of parents and friends joined in the gathering in the afternoon. Refreshments in abundance ■ were supplied by Mr Williams, the caterer, and these were served out in the schoolroom, close to the Domain — the games and sports being held in the new recreation ground on the Domain. After lunch the , mayor's prizes for good attendance and coniuct were awarded to Madge Hiirpcr and Herbert Cunningham, amicl.3t great applause from file rest of the scholars. Domain Board. — A short time ago a resident iras publicly elected to the Domain Board in place of a member who had died, and his name was forwarded for appointment by the Governor. Some surprise was caused by the irhole of the members receiving, in return, fresh appointments for three years from present late. When the members of the present board were elected in January, 1900. it was recom>Inended that their term of office be for three fears only, and their appointment bj the Gorernor in March following stated that they •cere appointed for that period; but this fresh. Gazette notice gives them nearly six years' ienure of office.
