Kaikoura, November 16. — The hot westerly, wind has blown almost constantly during tb« week, though iv did cloud over and promise, (it used U threaten once) to rain, out the clouds careered away, and we had a scorcher, to-day, but the wind has fallen, and on Friday, night it was calm, cool, silvery, beautiful. The daylight slowly sinks away to the sou'west'ard and beautiful lights pla> aboot the clouds that sweep before the steadfast 'face of tha moon. Gambling. — Mr Meredith, M.H.R., during hi canvass, condemned gambling in every shape; and form, saying that those who thought the totalisator was going to restrict the evil wera greatly disappointed, and that we, as a Christian community, should blush to license that which threatens tc undermine the greatness of the Anglo-Celtic peoples. Gambling was bad enough when pursued by men ; now that women are led away by its lures, It is unbearable.
Weathev. — A refreshing rain fell during Friday night and early on Saturday, while tl* shreds of snowy cloud clung above the sab!e> gorges, and when they cleared away the mountains were wonderfully beautiful. The warm wind got up again daring the day, bul fell thi« evening. Phe sunset tinged the drifting cloud brilliantly, and the rosy light lingered away to the southard long after Luna asserted her loveliness. To-day (Sunday) we are enjoying a warm, steady, refreshing rain, and herbage will greatly benefit, though shearing may be delayed a little.
County Eilection. — The County Council election was fairly satisfactory. Some regret is expressed at the defeat of Mr George Taylor, senior councillor, who always spoke and voted. fairly. Messrs Freebom Parsons, Georg;' Smith, Jamer Boyd, and Bell should see faii l piny all round, and Chris. Smith and Frank Monk will not easily be led by the nose in doubtful directions. T- - council meets on the 28th to elect a charrman and proceed to business.
