NEW ZEALAND BOWLING ASSOCIATION.

The sixteenth annual meeting of the New Zealand Bowling Association was held in. the Grand Hotel on Thursday evening. The president (Mr 0. F. Greenslade) occupied the chair, and there was a very large attendance of delegates of affiliated olubs. The following report • for the past year was presented : — - In submitting their sixteenth annual report your committee are glad to state that* howling is becoming more and more popular year by year, and the increased attendance of the fair sex each Saturday/ at the various greens moat encouraging.'' -Very few outdoor, games present the same facilities as bowling, ,anoT the presence of ladies at the matches will tenet to make bowlers more' unselfish than' ever,-:as it allows husband and wife, besides others, to spend their Saturday* together. Tournaments during the past year have been held at Wellington, Invercargill, Oamaru, and Dunedin, and it is to be regretted that at the Northern Bowling Association's tournament at Wellington we were unable to return the compliment they paid us in visiting Christchurch. last year. No doubt the date of their tournament being so close to out own proved a barrier to many southern bowlers, and in future your committee suggest that an arrangement might be arrived at in order to avoid dates clashing. Your executive were, however, well represented; and several .of our local players carried off prizes. Our northern friends, though disappointed at the North v. South match falling through, spared no pains or expense in most generously entertaining us. The tournament in Dunedin was commenced on January 27, in somewhat bad weather, but after the first day there was a decided improvement. The entries for rinks and doubles were about the same as usual, while for the singles there was a laTge increase. On January 30 (Ladies' Day) the Caledonian Green was the gayest of the gay. Our worthy president (Mr C. F. G-reenslade) was determined that nothing should be lacking, if possible to- obtain, aim those who were -privileged to- be present will long remember our friend's hospitality and kindness. 'Mrs Greenslade and daughters dispensed afternoon tea, and generously attended to-'the wants of one and all. The next evening a- smoke concert was .held in- the-Victoria> Hall', when, the following prizes were presented: — _ ,' : Hink- Tournament.— First, Taieri— TX^Smitbi. JW. Melroae, G. P. ■ Howell, W. Carswell (skip)'; second, Timaru— D. Daviß, '&. J. Sealey, Dt Reid, J. G. Gow (skip); third, Roslyn— Ji Corbett, O. Balk, W. Weir, W. C. Allnutt (skip). ■ > •' Double-handed -Tournament. — First - 'Sateri^ ■ G. P. Howell and W. Carswell; second,CCaledonian — T. Bewley and J. S. Evans; 'third", Kaituna— J. and J. Sanders. > Singles.— First, Christchurch— W. Barnett; second, Kaituna— H. W. Eeid; third, Taieri— G. P. Howell.' ' On Saturday, February 1, the president gave a generous invitation to all bowlers to vm» his country residence at Burkes. About 100 accepted his kind offer, and were conveyed there in drags. A most enjoyable afternoon was the Tesult, and brought to a close one of our most successful tournaments, chiefly due to the generous liberality of our president. The tournament next year will be in Christchurch. Death unfortunately has again' thinned our ranks. Mr Thomas Callender (known as the father of bowling," and the first president of this association in 1886 and 1887) and Messrs Haynes, T. Bewley, and Siedeberg have^passed from our midst, and their names will long live in our memories. In conclusion, your, committee look forward to a successful season, and trust that all delegates will do what lies in their power to still further the interests of this association. The balance sheet showed that there* was a credit balance of £103 6s lOd, an, improvement of £17 12s 2d in the financial position of the association. The report and balance 3heet were adopted on the motion; of the President, seconded by Mr Sneddon. The following office-bearers were elected for the coining year:— President. Mr W. Jacques - (Canterbury) ; vice-president, mx Peter Gilkison (Invercargill) ;."hon. treasurer, Mr T. Moodie; hon. auditor., Mr F. Peak©; hon. secretary, Mr G. L. Stewart; executive—The president, vice-president, -treasurer, secretary, and Messrs James Hislop, D. M'Phersdn, C. T. Paterson; and R. T* Wheeler, jun. . The Sydenham €lub was affiliated with the association. An application was made that the association should donate the first rink or doubles prize at the next Invercargill tournament. . A motion, proposed by Mr Payne, and seconded by Mr J. W. Smith, that the Oamaru and Invercargill Clubs be voted sgs towards prizes for their Ea&ter tournaments was negatived. The question of establishing a district bar* ncr competition was remitted to the executive and a special committee, from whaoh a report should be presented at a meeting to be hold ihat night three weeks. Proposals by Mr Allnutt for changes in the" annual' tournament were similarly dealt with. , - It was decided to hold the next tourna* ment in Christen urch, on dates to -ba decided by the Christchurch clubs, but with a recommendation in favour of January. -The .interclub matches, it was decided, should begin on Saturday, November 15. A very hearty vote of thanks was accordetl to the president ..by unanimous acclamation for the able way in which he had discharged the duties of the office, and for his extremely liberal entertainment of visiting bowlers. . After a period of nine years fa 1 """ 1 service, the hon. secretary (Mr K. 1. Wheeler) resolutely declined nomination for> a tenth period, and after general acknowledgment of his services to the association the following motion, proposed by Mr AUnutt, and seconded by Mr J. Hislop, was recorded on the minutes — " That the association accept with extreme regret the resign nation of the hon. sec. Mr R. T. Wheelery jun. ; place on record its high appreciation of the conspicuous ability displayed during his nine years' tenure of office, and trust toi find his Valuable services still at the dis« posal of the association in other offices." A vote of thanks to the chair concluded :
