NOTES BY JACK.

The annual meeting of the N.Z. Bowling Association was held on the night of the 30th ult. in the Grand Hotel, Dunedin, and was very largely attended. The president (Mr Greenslade) ably presided. The most important biisiness was the appointment of a secretary in place of Mr Wheeler, who has retired' after nine years' efficient service. Mr Stewart, who is appointed his successor, is a young bowler, but I as Mr Wheeler has promised to coach him, he ] will, I think, get on all right. The meeting was adjourned for three weeks to enable the Banner Committee and executive to meet and arrange about the banners, which are at last to be an accomplished fact. I shall defer any further remarks until the adjourned meeting ia hold. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Bowling Association a letter was received from Messrs J. Raitray and Son, offering, on behalf of Mr P. J. MackTe (of Messrs Mackie and Co., Limited), a handsome coronation snuff mull as a challenge trophy. The trophy wa* accepted with thanks, the conditions of competition to be decided at a future meeting. OPENING OF THE KAITUNA GREEN. The Kaituna Bowling and Tennis- Club's bowling green was opened on Saturday. There was a large attendance of members -and visitors, and, tempted by the- beautiful weather,'"~the ladies mastered in strong force. Not since .the - Ladies' Day on t the occasion of the association's tournament, some seven years ago, has there been such a_laige turn-out, and -the green, with its pretty surroundings, presented, a scene of bustling animation and beauty such as is rarely seen. The inspiriting 'music supplied by the Garrison Band served to heighten the enjoym-ent. Afternoon tea was provided for all by Mrs G. B. Dall Rnd Mrs C. J. Payne, the wives respectively of the president and vice-president. The green, though not looking so well as in some previous years, owing to the difficulty of getting rid of weeds, the seeds ol which are evidently blown on to the ground from the surrounding heights, played remarkably well, and much credit ie due to vie greenkeeper (Mr Hollingworth) for the success which has so far attended his efforts to overcome many difficulties. The match was between sides representing the President and Vicepresident. Before it was procefided with Mr G. B. Dall (the president) addressed a few words of welcome to the numerous visitors, and said the club was especially gratified «t the presence of so many ladies. They had hoped to be able to open the newly-prepared lawn tennis court, which a most energetic Lawn Tennis Committee had provided at considerable expense, but it had been deemed wise to defer doing so for a week or two. After referring in terms of praise to the work of the greenkeeper and thanking the Garrison Band for their presence, Mr Dall requested his wife to roll the first bowl, and this having been done gracefully, the President declared the green open for the season. Play was at once commenced on eight rinks, but as this did not absorb all the players, it was decided to limit the game to one of 15 heads, and so enable j others to engage in play for an hour or two. When the scores" of the first eight rinks were made up it was found that there was a tie, and so honours between the President and Vicepresident were even.
