Notes from Reefton.
(Fhoh Ouk Own Corbespondent.)
REEFTON, August 31. So iar very few returns are to hand from the dredges. Unfortunately some of the best dredges have bten laid up undergoing repairs, consequently the aggregate is much Below the mark.
The Reevea's Proprietary return ia not as good as last week, owing to heavy wash being met with.
An extraordinary meeting of- shareholders in thj Buller Dredges Company has been called for the 23rd September to consider the advisability of winding up the company, etc. The Industry Gold Mining Company commenced their first crushing at the beginning of last week, nnd will have a clean-up about Wednesday. The reef is a well-defined one, and shows gold freely, and "ihareholdeis are confident of a good return The shares are all held locally.
Alpine— The mine manager reports- The ciosscut west in No. 7 lovel has been extended 15ft, making the total distance 29ft. There is no improvement in No 11 south. The reef is going east, or at right angles to thp level, and I struck it this morning. It will take two or thiee shifts before I can say anything abo\it it as regards quality and size " I bioke a small piece off with *he pick, and got gold m it by crushing. That is more than I could get on the north end, further back in the level. Where we have got it new will be -10ft from thp noith end of it. I have logged up the passes, and secured the ground in. the stopes iv the south end, so that it can be kept open for an airway. There is no improvement in the rise from the stopo, and I ha\e stopped it. 1 will start the north branch level agam to-night, as the reef is in the leading stope, extending north over the back of the level, and there is no sign of it in the level. The length of the reef is 44ft m the level, a-nd it is 50ft m the first stope.
