Notes from rentral Otago .

(From Our Own CoßßEsroNDEirr.)

MACRAES, August 30. The weather has been exceptionally fine for this time of the year, and a continuance of it will cause a shortage of water for mining purposes.

The Bar Quartz Mining Company have just finished a crushing which should be satisfactory to the- shareholders (who are all local men). The crushing gave about lldwt to the ton, and as the reef is a large one and the stone easy to get there should be a considerable profit after paying all expenses. Mr C. M'Gill, who owns the Maratana claim, has his battery nearly erected, and expects to get a start crushing in a week 01 two. The Bonanza mine employs a number of men, and keeps steadily at work mining and milling. The Ounce Quartz Mining Company have been idle for some time, but I hear a start is likely to be made again.

At Golden Point the mill is kept steadily running producing scheelite along with the gold. I am informed that some development work is going on at the mine. A new drive ia in 100 ft to cut the reef at a lower level. Some additions and alterations are also about to be made at the battery. Mr W. Donaldson has returned from the Old Country along with Mr 3 Doualdson, via America, and are at present staying at Golden Point.

The second dredge that was ptit on Macraes Flat and proved a failure has been pulled* down and shifted to Poolburn. where it 13 to bo hoped she will meet with better success.
