WARRNAMBOOL TO MELBOURNE.

MELBOURNE, August 31

A very large field started for the Dunlop Uoad Race, Warmambool to Melbourne, including most of the leading riders of the Commonwealth and four New Zealanders — Ralston, ■Tjrbee, Calder, and Chambers. The weather wm showery. Immense crowds assembled to witness the finish. The winner was Chfcppell, ■a Victorian, with 55min start. He covered the distance of ICS miles in 9hr Omin Ssec. Castles (55mui) and M'Donald (70mhi start), both Victorians, were second and third respectively. The winner has never before previously started in big events. O'.CaUaghan, a "Victorian, made the fastest time (Bhr 4Gmin 23sec).

One hundred and one competitors started in ths ro3d race, going in sections. The journey was very heavy, and then were numerous accidents, the mest serio-is being that to Robertson, who collided with a blind horse, and received i. slight concession of the brom. R9lston, Forbes, and Jpwcll were the scratch men Ralston had the dual misfortune to puncture his lyre and fall, each necessitating a change of machine. He found himself alone 69 miles from Melbourne, and made the rest of the journey without a pace-make \ He finished nineteenth in Bhr 54min 225-3 c. Calder was fifteenth, his time being Bhr 57mm 53sec. None of the < uter-State ridt-rs secured places.
