PUBLIC SCHOOL CADETS.
Major Loveday's report was laid on the table of the House this afternoon. The officer commanding state* that with a view of supplying a means whereby all ranks may learn their drill and dntiea, he purposes issuing a manual dealing with the following subjects: —Squad, company, and battalion drill, ceremonial movements, manual and firing exercises, bugle- calls, morse and semaphore systems of signalling, guard mounting, posting of sentries, etc., and the duties generally of every officer and non-commissioned officer. The book will be illustrated from direct photographs. He al.^o recommends the encouragement of camps of instruction, which would bo held at a time when Volunteers would not be in camp. The instructora should be- men of tho best kind procurable, and teachers who qualify themselves by examination might receive recognition by the payment of a small annual grant. There are 92 corps in tho colony with a total of all ranks of 5712. Of these Auckland contributes 1299, Otago 907. Wellington 79*, Hawke's Bay 489, and Wan407.
