GOLDEN RIVER DREDGING COMPANY. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, — In your issue of Monday Mr Georgeson makes some inquiries and remarks concerning the above company. The leason why the dredge cannot diedge satisfactorily at fiom :sft to 4ft above normal is not far to seek, as the rner is some 7ft deeper wheie the dicd^p i«; now operating than v.">s the case uheie Mr Taylor worked. '1 he late dredgemaster cortainiy predicted large returns, but it should be remembered by those who are so fond of drawing comparisons that his returns during the four weeks he worked fell from 800oz to Boz for a week. Comparisons aic in any case odious, and the quotation of the height above normal is also misleading, as the Alexandra-Roxburgh Gorge is controlled to a, great extent by the Mimuherikia River, which joins the Molyneux below where the so-called normal mark is situated ; and by the same river are discharged the large bodies of drift and silt which make this part of the river almost undredgeable on every trifling rise. Possibly there is room for changes in the company. Some fresh winches and longer ladders would also not be arni3S in this part of the world. — I am, etc.,

Local Shareholder. Bald Hill Flat, August 19.
