HALDANE.

August 20. — A social and danc-e were tendered to Corporal H. Haivey, of the Seventh Contingent on the night of the 15th icst. by the residents of Waikawa, Halda_ne, and Fortrose. Corporal Har\ey was presented with an address and a purse of sovereigns and entertained at a concert and dance by his friends in tho Haldano schoolroom. During tho entertainment speeches and songs suitable to the occasion were given by the admirers of thoss New Zealanders who have gone forth to fight the battles of the Empire. The char wa-s taken by Mr James Wybrow, sen., who took a great interest in the who!e proceedings, and who briefly addressed the returned trooper m t'-rms lilghlv complimentary to hlmse'.f and his comra-dea of tho Seventh, 'lhc guest of the evening, while regretting the loss of his two ccinradfts-, thanked the people for the great compliment paid him, and said if the Empire required his services again he wab ready and willing to go. At this loud cheers were given by those present. The school children contributed songs and recitations, and acquitted themselves in a very creditable manner, which greatly added to the night's enjoyment, and the ladies kindly provided all the good things. Dancing was carried on until long after dayliglit. Great credit is duo to the committee for the orderly way in which they carried out tlreir duties. Th-ey comprised Messrs James Wybrow, sen. (chairman), James Cusack (seclctary), William Ro3ie, George Wybrow, John Wybrow, Jeremiah O'Brien, Uenrj Watson, and Charles Harvey.
