DUNBACK.

August 18. — The ceremony of heating the flag presented to tho school by the Education Board was proceeded with on the Bth int,t. 'a he afternoon being cold, there were only a few of the grown-up people present. On account of the cold, scholars and vintors gathered m Miss Barclay's room to hear the addresses to ba given. Mr Isbiater, chairman of the School Committee, oocupied the chair, and explained th? object of tho gathering. Admirable addresses were given by Mebsrs Blundell and Ritchie. They explained tho symbols contained in the flag, the principle which the flag oi the British nation represented, and exhorted all to upho'd that principle, as it meant freedom and liberty to all subiects of tho British Empire. An adjournment was th°n made to the outside, where the flag was hoisted by Miß3 Barclay, amidst tho cheers of all assembled. The children then filed past and saluted tho flag and sang a '•erse of the National Anthem. The children, under Miss Barclay, also gave two other selections. The flag pole was the gift of Mr F. J. Sullivan, of Dur^din.

Oddfellows' Ball.— The animal ball, under the auspices of the Loyal Dunback Lodge, M U.I 0.0. F., was held in ("Dover's Hall on Friday evening. The evening was Fine, no wind or clouds, and not much frost, consequently the attendance was a rocord one for a ball. Visitors nprj present from l^ui'cdin. Waikouaiti, Palmcrston, and Oamaru. The turroufc was admirab'y conducted, ;?<] reflected great credit on the committee in charge, and th> M.C, Bro. E. Flynu. The hall w.is l'berallj decorated with evergreens and fl<^s, and looked well. Thes«, with the bright(oloured dresses of the ladies and the different co'oured sallies worn I\v the Oddfellows, made a very pretty, animated scene while a dance was in progress. During an interval P.G. Bro J. Murray, on behalf of the 'edge, presented P.G. Bro. Frank Glover with a handsomclyfiamed emblematical rartificate. During the crn.-Tse of his remarks Bro Murray Etated that when the lodge opened ten years ago there vere 22 members, a^id that now, in Bpite of n.any sec»3Mons there wo»-e £3 members on the roll. Songs were fcur.i; during the evening by Miss Patercon and Messrs M'Donald and l'-udge. Excellent music wiifl supplied by Mips Fodor (pmno), Messrs Cheyne (violin), and Diack (piccolo), the piano being kindly lent by M^ Gilmour.

Cliuroh Music— The organ ordered by the ccrnmittee of the Presbyterian Church here arrived from America and waa played for the first time on the 11th inst. by Miss Venn, who is- organist nt present. The orga.ii is a very fi'ie one and has a splend'd tone.
