MILBURN

August 25. — Since my last notes appeared, I regret to say. an accident occurred on the phosphate works, Mr Ewing, mp.nager orf the mine, having sustained a. fracture of a small bono near the ankle, through slipping over an embankment.

Lecture. — We had another prohibition lecture here on the 22nd inst., Mr Whyte, of Wairoa, putting forth the claims of the Prohibition party. The audience were very undemonstrative and did not once applaud the speaker, but nevertheless we shall have a fair number who will "strike out the top line."

Phosphates. — Milburn guano is now for sale at £3 10s a ton. No doubt the results from the manure will be looked for with great interest.

Social. — A pocial was held here on the 19th mat. in honour of Mr Arthur Budd, who had jufit concluded a series of ambulance lectures. Mr J. C. Mac Donald occupied the chair, and a. good programme of songs, etc., was gone through. During tho evening Mr Budd was presented with a handsome travelling-bag, suitably inscribed, as a mark of appreciation of the course of instruction. A most enjoy Ale evening was spent in ping-pong and other games, and a really good social was brought to a close at a late hour by the singing of " Au'tl lang syne."
