KOKONGA.
August 22. — Our annual school concert was lield last Friday evening, 15th, nnd proved a great success, iinanoia-lly and otherwise. The night was beautifully fine and clear, enabling li-any to come from a distance. The building v/as comfortably filled— not, as is usual, overrrowded. Mr X, Williamson, chairman of the School Committee, occupied the chair, and .-ifter a short speech the following programme was gone through :— Pianoforte solo, Mrs Olendining; song, Mr Pringle; Eong, Miss Harris ; song, Mr Dickison ; recitation, Miss M'Culloch; song, Mr Glendining; pianoforte eolo, Mrs Cutten; song, Mr Ball; reading, Mr Bremner; song, Mr Pringle; song, Miss Mathias. The second part wa-s begun with a pianoforte solo by Mrs Cutten ; song, Miss Harris; song, Mr Ball; song, Mt Bremner; recitation, Miss M'Culloch ; comic song, Mr G-lcndining (encored) : pianoforte solo, Miss Mathits; song, Mr Prir.gle. Tho singing of the National Anthsm brought the progTO-mme to a close. Mrs Glandining acted as accompanist. After the usual hearty votes of thanks to performers and others a bountiful supply of ycfreshmsnts was' handed round by c, willing hand of young ladies. The room was after--ivsrda cleared for dancing, which was kept up for a few hours. About £& wae cleared for the school funds. The weather lately has been very fine and springlike. The beautiful sunfcbino and the sweet singing of tho lark seem to make all glad thsvt winter is over. The ■winter on the whole has been exceptionally fine — the mildest we have had for years, there being no ice fit for skating and only a few falls of slow.
Coronation Holiday. — The Coronation of King Edward ar.d Queen Alexandra wan celeIrtted quietly, only the flag being hoiated. !N.i pubic demonstration of any kind look yl»-ee. Mr Pringle preached a very in treating and instructive Coronation sermon «uii^ole for "the occasion, and eppropnate hymiw were chosen. At the close of the service the Xational Anthem was Bung.
Political Matters.— ln this dishict the undermentioned ar* standing for Parliament- — Mr Herdmaa, solicitor; Mr Cutten, solicitor; Mr IBwing, largely known in mining ciiclcs; also Mr Nicholson. More about these gentlemen •wh^n we havo heord their views. I notice Mr J J. Ramsay is announced for tho Taieri sea-t. He is personally known and veiy popular in this district, where he spent many years of his lif" and alwa3 r s took a most pioimnent part in public matters, and he should make a capital member.
August 25. — Since last writing we have had a great ohange in the weather. Rain and lieavy snow showers prevailed yesterday afternoon, and the mountains a.nd hills are white this morning. Heavy frost again set in last night. In consequence of the frosts at this time oi the year vegetation is retarded.
