CARSTON

August 25.— The weather here during th« past week has bean ideal. Farmers have been making good headway with ploughing operations. Unfortunately, rain set in on Saturday evening, later on followed by mow, so that farm work will be again impeded. However, at this time of the yssvr things do not take long to dry up, so that the time lost may not be long. Bunny. — Rabbits m this district are exterminated, mostly by trapping; and this mods seems to prove more successful than any ws ' have tried. Roads. — Our road 1* at .aat beLne attendee* to, the contractors being busy on it, forming it and making it passable, bo thai folk can get abroad with a little more comfort than has t.e?n their wont for aome time past. Amusements. — The- Garston ppuister3, sihted by the married ltuhes, held .a very k >cceasful and altogether enjoyable social in th^ 'ocal schoolhouse on August 8 to celebrate the Coionation of the King. The catering wa« ■done by Mr D. Kingsland, of Invercargill, and was everything that could bo desired. The school children were to be treated to a if east on the Saturday following, but owing to th» unfavourable elements on that day, all sports had to be abandoned until Monday, when things had cleared up a bit. The children had cake, lollies, and furit in abundance, and ar-orts and games of various kinds were indulged in until evening, when all and sundry departed, well pleased with their day's erjoyment. Wo also celebrated the Coronation by a great bonfire, which was built on Quarry Hill, Alt MacCaugnan supplying fuel. .Sockets were sent up, and altogether our dia» trict presentee! quite a lively scene.
