SOUTH OTAGO v. A JUNIOR FIFTEEN.
Two matches were played at Carisbrook. on Saturday — the O.R.F.U. trial match and! a game between a junior fifteen and a, team, picked from the South Otago clubs. The latter commenced at 1.30 be-fore a limited! number of spectators. The country team (Colours), playing with the sun isi their eyes during the first spell, showed more- dash, than their opponents, although the game was fairly even. The combination of the lecal team was very poor, and whe-n the visitors started a rush they were very hard to stop. About half an hour after starting the only ecore of the match occurred. Tha visiting forwards took the ball into the Blues' twenty-five, and some erratic passing ensued which ended in the ball going to Paterson, who was playing three-quarters on the lefb wing, and ho neatly potted a goal. On several occasions the local team carried the play right up to the Colours' line*, but good tackling averted a score. The second spell was fairly, fast, but towards the end both teams wea-e showing signs of exhaustion. Choo Quee got away with the ball from near the middle of tha ground, making a smart run, but he finished up badly near the line, where, he could have made a score certain by passing out to the wing. As it was, he got collared and another rosy chance was lost to the Blues. Th» town team continued the attack, and on one occasion were nearly over at the* corner by the tennis court. Tho Colours' defence, however, was strong enough to withstand the assault, and the game, which was controlled by Mr P. Prießt, ended: South Ota,go . . 4- points Junior Team Nil.
