WAIWERA.
August 4 - A good deal of rain has fallen here during the last few days. At present, although the wcatlu-r is ninch finer, the land is «til! very wet. Roads, too, are in a very sloppy state. I notice some of the township settlers have petitioned the County Council to repair the road from the river to the station. Th:3 is undoubtedly a. niuch-necdcd work, as year after year the mud near the township on this road is ankle-deep — a diß?race to the otherwise neat little township. It is to be hoped Eomethmg substantial will soon be done, as so many will be benefited by it.
Small Birds. —l have been expecting for some time to see the Government take up tli2 bird question, and at last we have been shown a sample of the measures expected to be passed, and if we must judge our law-makers by the laws they make, the less we say the better. At the rate we are being bound by new, senseless, and arbitrary laws we sha'l soon be cornered altogether. As it is, I should not be ruijKiw4 *t *&£ time to Me a_gen«rAl au^za-
tion of New Zealand farmers to South Africa, for our position in this otherwise "beautiful country is becoming untenable. Social. — Since my last a very successful social was held in the Mission Hall in connection with the Band of Hope, Mr Gibson presiding. All the items were well received. As is usual,, a capital programme was provided, and a very fair sum raised for the good cause. Waiwera is undoubtedly a sober place, notwithstanding the rumour once circulated that there existed in it a private still, and lately a. cider machine. Farmers' Union. — Our branch of the Farmers' Union at Clinton is very much alive, keeping abreast of the times, and they are determined to do their part in demanding right and justice as far as possible for the down-trodden and much-abused farmer.
