July 21. — On the invititiov of the Rev ,T. J. Ceirney tho members of the c':oir of t)<e Presbyterian Church and the teachers o' the Sunday School met at a social gathering 111 the vestry of the church on Tuesday flight, 15tb inst. There were about 30 ladies and gentlemen present, and a most pleasant time was spent. A long musical programme wa3 gone through, solos being contributed by Misses Valentine, M. Valentire, Martin, and Falconer, and Messrs Stewart, Wil«on, and Gibson, wd a, x«ui*ti«a to Miaa
M'Dougall. During the evenirg Mr Cairney, in a short speech, complimented the choir on its efficiency, saying it compared favourably even with some of the large city churches, and this state of affairs was largely due to the able manner in which Mr Kerr conducted and Mrs Kerr accompanied thei ainging. He also thanked the Sunday School teachers for their services. He knew their work entailed a considerable amount of self-denial ; and as it was impossible for him to be present on Sunday afternoons, he was glad to feel he could leave the school in competent hands. Refreshments were handed round at intervals, and the meeting broke up at 11 p.m. Athenteum. — The monthly meeting of the Library Committee was held on Monday evening last, Mr A. Heckler presiding. The Work 3 Committee reported having made a start with repairs to the e!rt°rior of haP, etc., preparatory to getting same painted. A point having been raised re appointment of trustees — as to whether the old trustees or tho committee ou?ht to recommend new ones for appointment, the matter was referred to the Under-Secretary for Lands, who wrote in reply stating that the most satisfactory way of nominating persons for appointment was by calling a pubic meeting for that purpose. The chairman and Messrs Davis and Crocomo were appointed to overhaul the old books in Ihe libiary and withdraw any unfit for circulation. The librarian was ordered to place a suggestion book before subscribers with a, view to ordering a quantity of new books at next meeting. Mr D. Malloch was appointed treasurer pro tern, during Mr Russell's absence, end the loan of £77 was reduced by paying off a sum of £37.
