RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

NORTH OTAGO WINTER, MEETING. (Fbou Our -Own Coekespondent.) First Day— Thursday, May 29. The weather was beautifully fine for the opening day of the North Otago Jockey Club' 6 Winter meeting, nnd the attendance waa considerably larger than usual. The racing was interesting, and backers were fairly successful, as the majority of the favourites succeeded in catching the judge's eye as winners. During the day good deal of money was shut out of the totahsator because the officials were unable to cope with the rush of late investors. A number of bookmakers were present, and the names of several were taken by the club officials. The club and the telegraph authorities came into contact over the club's action in shutting down the telegraph office on the course, and the Acting-Premier is reported to have wired to the club to the effect that if they did not open the office for the second day an operating tent would be erected outside the gates. From a good start Turcoman was slow to begin, and racing- for the straight the most prominent of the others were Summer Rose, Narcissus, and Sahara. Once in the straight Narcissus came away under punishment, and, after a finish with Sahara, the former won, all out, by two lengths; Sahara waa the same distance in front of J.P. Time, linin 21bec. From a good start Dundas was at once taken to the front, and, turning into the back stretch, led Cameo and Magnificent by two clear lengths, Ardnarff whipping in. Dundas maintained his lead to the far bend, and racing for tho straight Magnificent and Cameo were both in trouble.
