Acting- I'romu'i. received | the foiijv.iug telegram fioin the Health Officer at Auckland: — "I regret to have to inform you of the exi"tencp of plague in Auckland. The paiient was taken ill on the 19th. Infecrion was caught through handling cargo from an infected port. There is little likelihood of further cat-ps, as the rats here are not infected. The patient was at once removed to a special hospital, and everything burned. All the contacts are doing well, and are being well cared for." AUCKLAND, Apii] 25. Dr .Mason (health officer) and Dr Makgill | (district health officer) had an interview with the Mayor this morning upon the question of making provision for the treatment of ca^es of infectious disease. Prompt action in this direction is deemed necessary by the Health Department owing to the fact tlhat cases of scarlet fever and diphtheria are being sent to the general hospital for treatment in adjacent buildings, and it is felt the time has arrived when special provision should be made for such cases. It was decided to call a special conference of representatives of local bodies to meet Dr Mabon on Monday at the Municipal Building?. April 26. Virtue, the patient confined in the plague hospital, is doing well «o far The family are isolated, and none of them have developed any symptoms of plague, though it is seven day* since Virtue was taken ill. is one that Dr Ogston is at present pushing on to the best of his power. In the event of a rase of plague occurring, he has the power to select any public reserve as a location for a temporary hospital of this nature.
