Kawaran Notes.
fFEOii Oue Own Corhesfondent.) April 24. The river is in splendid order for dredgingnew, and lowering fast, as the frost on the high. I country is beginning to affect the heads of the various rivers and creeks of the watershed. The Meg and Annie and Upper Magnetic dredges still uphold their -reputations as goldproducers. The return of 70oz last week from the Htter would have be'en greater but for the fact that the slight rise experienced at the beginning of the week started the drift travelling. A stoppage for a couple of shifts to effect some slight repairs also affected her returns. Iho Mp=; and Annie's ground is of the same nature as that operated on last week The G-entlo Annie is now abreast of where 1 the machinery was put on her. She- is getting a. cccrser sample of gold than what was got lower dcvii. The bottom is nice and soft on. iho western bank, but as yet it is not very wide, running into a hard reef on the eastern side. However, the soft bottom may open out very quickly, when no doubt she will get improved returns. I am informed that the Eclipse, at Gibbston, has so far been unable to bottom. More's the pity, as there was a consensus of opinion that the ground is rich. I notice that Gibbslon coal is being burned! now by the Meg and Annie in preference to the Bannockburn article. There is no com- ; parison between the two. I have had an opportunity this week of testing the Cardrona coal. It is splendid, and is held by competent judges . to ba the best steaming and household coal in. the Lake district. Next Rummer, when the Doo!an's Crock Company have their mine in, full swing, I expect to sec the whole fleet of dredges here using their coil, the long distance ' and cost of cartage prohibiting tho Cardrona ' article from being used.
