The National Mortgage and Agency Company's Melbourne manager, reporting u..der date March 12, snys • — The past month has been noted for high prices rather than volume of business. All lines of produce, thou.h duung this tinia fluctuating slightly, closa firm and advanced. The shortness of yiel Is is intensified by the continued dry ness of the season, for in ninny parts of the country, utiless rain falls very shortly, the settlers will have to leave their farms. Needless to tsy, farming operations are therefore practically at a standstill. Exports have been fairly heavy, especially in wheat and oats, the former entirely under early contracts and the latter chiefly so, in both cases, unfortunately showing a loss. Fe:?d oats, owing to the drought, and milling, owing to scarcity, are inquired for • shipping demand is not so keen.. Both Ta?jnaniaii's and New Zealand's (the latter, of course, old crop) are firmly held. For the new crop New Zealand, which will probably be late, an easier tendency is shown. Hides. — Messrs Goklsbrough, ilort. and Co. report under date 6th inst- — With larger supplies forward, the market showed a tendency to east for medium weights, but picked stouts (of which there are but few) continue in good lequest. For New Zealands of this description we auctioned to-day a few which realised fiom lOd to lid per lb, the latter late being top price for this week's market.
