A Cruel and Cowardly Act. — We have lesrnsd with the deepest rr><?ret that we have b"en | mado the victims of a cowardly hoax in cop- [ unction with a letter that appeared in our issue of 22nd ult. horn Grr-en Valley, purporting to describe an r-ntertaimnent there. IVe have ascertained beyond all doubt that the letter in question is simply a tissue of falsehoods, and we most sincerely regret that its publication by us in good faith should have caused pain to anyone concerned. We- tender our nnrcj. served apologies to those whose liptnos were cruelly misused in tliis false report, and we ivtend to take the utmost pains to sheet home the concoction to its cowardly author and to publish hi 3 name ;<<; a warning to all who may have transactio'l3 with him in future. The perpetrator of tho cruel hoax richly deserves a ducking in a. duck pond, and we shall be only too pleased to furnish the name to anyone win feels called upon to give him this salutary lesson. — Ed.
