NORTH OTAGA.
February 4. — The weather has been remarkably warm during the past few days, and consequently crops are ripening fast — in fact, rather too fast. Cutting has commenced in a few cases, and by the time this reaches you it will be pretty general all over the district.
Water Race. — There has been a break in the Oamaru water race, and I understand it will take some time to repair. In the meantime ratepayers are notified to be careful with water.
In Camp. — The Waitaki Mounted Rifles have had a very successful week in camp, and although the encampment has been held at a time 'when most of the farmers a-re busy, the attendance was very good. I understand between 50 and 60 applications for enrolment m the ninth contingent have been sent in to the Defence Office.
A Welcome Visitor. — The ship Invereargill p* is in the port of Oamaru at present. There are quite a number of people in this district who were passengers by her on her first voyage, landing here in 1874. Needless to say, many of them have visited the ship, few, if any, having been aboard since the day they landed, bo many years ago — " yours truly," nmonget the number. If th's catches the eye of any of our shipmates in other parts of the colouy I send hearty greetings.
