Freckles.
The spots knoAvn as freckles (lentigo) are pin-head to pea sized, round, oval, or irregular, and of a yellow hh or brownish colour. They occur chiefly upon the face and the back's of the hands-, although they are occasionally obseived on the trunk. They are more common during adolescence than at any other peiiod, and are most marked in indivKtualif of blonde complexion, parlicularlj red-haired s?iibject>. They ordinarily make their appearance in summer, and fade pai tidily or completely during the cold season. The condition is, due to the heat and light of the solar rays. Freckles are due to an increased deposition of pigment in circumscribed case*, of cells in the basal layers of the epidermK They maybe caused to disappeai by treatment, but are very bkely to return. The treatment is directed to removing the layer of skin containing the pigment. The follow ing lotion applied night and morning, at first gently, later, vigorously, is recommended : Bichloride of merciuj-, wx grains ; dilute acetic acid, two drachma ; borax 40 grains ; rose water, 4oz. Be careful v,nh this, as it is poisonous.
