TAPANUI'S WELCOME.

very hearty reception at Tapanui on Wednesday last. He was met at the railway station by the Mayor (Mr W. Quiii), and driven to Tapanui in a smart four-in-hand team. In the evening he was tendered a. welcome social, when the Central Hall was packed. The Mayor presided, and prpved a mo3t enthusiastic chairman. In his address lie gave the boys of the fourth and fifth great praise for their work at the front, and dwelt upon the exceptional hardships they had to endure through being detained at Beira and having to face the deadly fever. A short musical programme was provided, and thoroughly enjoyed, and at a suitable staee of the proceedings the chairman presented Trooper Morrison with a serviceable field-glass. The audience cheered lustily, and joined in singing " For lie's a jolly good fellow." A feature -of the social was a collection of Boer rifles, swords, bandoliers, and other war curios, which were o.i exhibition. These were the property of Sergeant Kidd (of Dunedin), an old Tapaniu boy, and, needless to say, the articles were examined with, great interest. Our local caterer (Mr Quayle) provided for the inner man in a way that reflected great cradit, and a very successful social was terminated by a dance.
