FIRE IN GORE.

A fire broke out at Gore at 3 o'clock on Saturday morning in Main street, whereby the shops occupied by H. Wright (bicycle agent), and S. Ferguson (watchmaker) were destroyed; and thoso of Lakeman (fruiterer) on the one side and C. Clayton (photographer) on the other were partially damaged. The Fire Brigade were early on the scene, and rendered splendid work, practically confining the fire to the building in which' it started. A good deal of stock was saved. The building was owned by Mr King, and insured in the Standard Insurance Office for £250. Wright's stock was insured in the Imperial for £250, and Ferguson's stock for £200 in the Magdeburg-, and £100 in the North German. Both Wright and Ferguson are losers over and above the amount of their insurances. Clayton was not injured. His loss of stock muat be £50 or £60. The building was owned by Hagen, and insured for £150. Probably £50 will cover the damage, and about the same for Lakeman' s building, which was insured for £200 in the Standard.

All the flags for British ships of war, exprpt the Royal Standards, are made in the Government dockyards, and the enormous number required may be judged from the fact that in the colour loit at Chatham alone about 18,000 flags are made in a year. The Melbourne police, who worked overtime during the royal visit to Melbourne, were determined to have the tame treatment meted out to them as was given to their confreres in Sydney in January, and as the result of their agitation they have been informed that Ihpy are to receive an allowance of from 39 6d to 4-s> 6cl per day. accordina to yie qjttenL of tke oierume vented.
