QUEEN VICTORIA'S MEMORIAL.

Mr R. T. Wheeler, jun., hon. secretary of the Queen Victoria Memorial Statue Fund, reports that the committee have received the following letter from the Hon. Richard Oliver: — Dear Mr Fergus,— l have just received your letter of April 10 informing me that a committee has been formed in Dunodin to erect a statue to the memoiy of our deal departed Queen. I need not tell yon that this gives me great pleasure, and that I hope the monument will be of such a character as no I only worthily to commemorate our much-loved Sovereign, but also to beautify Dunedin. Please assure the committee of my willingness to be of any assistance to them in any way, and meantime put my name down for a contribution of 50 guineas. The executive held a long meeting ye&terday morning. The Secretary reported that High street, from Dr Stuart's monument to' the Daily Times Office, would be barricaded off for contributors <o the fund, and that tickets for the public could be obtained from the secretary for admission to the enclosure at 2s 6d each, and also from the leading tobacconists. All prepaiHtions in connection with the statue were well in hand, and everything tended towards a successful ceremony. Mr R. Glendining, hon treasurer, acknowledges the xmdermentioned donations to the above fund : — Previously acknowledged, £1857 8s 7d , Miss *\ M. Wimperia, 10s 6d ; Hon. R. Oliver, JES2 10s ; W. Wills, £2 2s ; Otago Daily Times Company, £5 ssj; John Sidey, £50; Thomas Brydone, £10 10s; John Macpherson, £1 Is; H. Turton, £1 Is; Atoniona School, 6s lOd; Waitepeka School, 9s 3d; Deep Stream School, 3s Gd; Moa. Flat School, 12s; Kahuika School, 5s 9d: 'Waikoua.iti School, 3s 4d; Stoneburn School, ss; Broad Bay School, 2s; Union street School Is; North Ta'ieri School, 15s 6d, Otiake School, 8s 6d; —total, JE1984 Is 3d.
