THE LIABILITY OF EMPLOYERS. PROPOSED NEW INSURANCE COMPANY.
CHRISTCHURCH, June 20.
At a special meeting of the Canterbury Employers' Association it was resolved that owing to the excessive rates being charged by accident insurance companies in New Zealand to cover employers under the Employers' Liability and Workmen's Compensation Acts and at common law, an Employers' Insurance Company be immediately formed. -
A correspondent of the Southland Timen puts the following as what may happen under clause 16 of the Workers' Compensation for Accidents Act: — A merchant has a staff of clerks. One goes to the post office with letters and gets run over by a cab, and is killed; another gets run over by a cyclist without a lamp, and also gets killed; and yet another, on a windy day perhaps, loses his life by a loose brick, stone, or signboard falling on him. The total liability, with costs, amounts to, say, £2000. Now, what control has the merchant over these fatalities? In fact, what on God's earth has he to do with them? And yet the average merchant is financially ruined for life should the cab .owner, the cyclist, and the owner of the building be men or youths of straw, which is more than likely.
