GYMNASTICS.

Notes by Parallels

The Dunedin Club had good mu-teiv, again last week, three squads being at work both nights, and good work was don^ by the different squad?. Aftei the evening's practice Messrs Matthews, Austin, Siedeberg, and Fergusson were to be seen executing some very difncvilt moves son the horizontal and parallel bars and rings. There was qiiite a large audience watching this club's performance on Tuesday night. Among the spectators w?s Mr Jewiss, a prominent member of Mr T. Harkei's gymnasium in Chiist-e-hurcli. He informed me that gymnastics were booming in Christ church, and thai the gymnasium were being well attended in the City of tht Plain**. The members of the Dunedin Gymnastic Club me' in the Crown Hotel on Satuiday evening to make a presentation to Mr G. Li. Austin, who will uot be een so much in the Dunedin Gymnasium as heretofore on account of business taking Uim out of town. The presentation took th form of a gold albert, and Mr W. H. Matthews, in making the presentation, referred to Mr Austin's many good qualities and to the amount of work he had lone for the club dining the last nine years, as. an instructor and secretary. Mr H" G. Siedeberg also spoke in glowing term )f M' Austin's Liabilities and his .nany good qualities. Mr Austin, in a lew well-chosen words, .suitably responded. During th* evening songs were rendered by Messrs Errington, Jacobs, Munro, Lothian, Liggins, Hudson, and Alexander, me 1 recitations by Messrs Stables and M'Gregor, Mr Ligginfr officiating at the piano. A pleasant evening was brought to a close with «he singing of "Auld lang syne."

The High street Club had good mister* on their evenings last week, and good work v. as gone through. Captain Wilson was hard at work with the first bqund, getting' them into form for their concert. On Thursday night I noticed G-. Calder having » go with the first squad, and he was showing good form. I hear this club will be losing the sei vices of H. M'Leod, who is one o£ its most promising; lnem'jeis, and who perfoiincd really well in the competition last year. The Mornington Club got through some good work la=fc week, and I was glad to see f. Galloway performing again, his hand being now better. On Friday night a, team of nine men, under Captain Galloway, journeyed to Outram and assisted at a concert in aid of the Outram Gymnasium. They" gave items on the horizontal and parallel bars. Some of the double movements on the horizontal bar by I. Galloway and J. Wi'ies fairly biinging down the house, ancli the tvi o pyramids on the parallel bars evoked rounds of applause. The George street Club still continue to get very poor attendances, which, must be very disheartening to Instructor Gibb, and it is to be hoped that the members will try and induce a few more to swell the numbers. The North-East Valley, on the other hand, arc getting- fine musters, and pome good works is being done in this gymnasium. It would pay the leaders of this gymnasium to pay a visit to the Dunedin Club, and see th© order and discipline which is kept there, aa an improvement could be made in this re: spect in the Valley Chib. The Anderson's Bay Club had a good muster on Tuesday night, and Instructor Siedeberg put the members through some good work. The Albany street Club still continue tc progress favourably, and good form is beinjj shown by the senior members. The Union street Club had gooct musters last week, and good work was done by the members. A good team should be selected from this club this season. The Outi-am Club made a start on Monday night. The club promises to be a very successful one. The Mornington Club were very much taken with the parallel bars which, this club possesse?.
